Reader for iPhone and Android available in December

Sony will unveil an e-book store for Android devices and the iPhone in December, according to a note on the company's Web site. "Reader for iPhone and Android available in December," the note says.

A screen shot of the iPhone app (below) shows options like "Browse by Subject," "My Wishlist," "Bestsellers," and "New Arrivals," as well as the ability to scroll through books or search for specific titles and authors. The Android app preview shows the Reader library, and a favorites option.

Sony sells three different e-book readers: the Sony Reader Pocket Edition; Sony Reader Touch Edition; and Sony Reader Daily Edition. Only the Daily Edition – listed at $249.99 – has wireless access, however. To load content on the Pocket Edition ($149.99) and the Touch Edition ($199.99), users have to plug their devices into a computer and drag and drop books onto the Readers.

Presumably, however, you won't have to own a Sony Reader to access content from its bookstore on the iPhone or Android devices; just like users can download the Kindle app on a mobile device and buy books without actually owning a Kindle. There was no specific mention of synching, which would allow you to stop reading on an iPhone or Android phone and pick up on the Reader or PC.
